I crossed paths with this Yellow Crowned Night Heron just off the waterfront path along Lockwood Drive - on the Charleston peninsula.
With steady focused, eyes, this heron is ready for the night shift. Most active at dusk and dark; they patrol marsh edges, tidal creeks, and coastal neighborhoods with one goal: crabs. They use their stout bills to crack and handle hard-shelled prey. You will find them across the Southeast's warm coastlines, often nesting surprisingly close to people in trees over water or wetlands. Calm, statuesque, and intensely purposeful; it is one of those birds that turns a quiet shoreline into something cinematic.
