I crossed paths with this Willet on Vanderbilt Beach in Naples, FL.
The Willet is a sturdy, no-nonsense shorebird often spotted striding through tidal flats and salt marshes like they have a schedule to keep. At first glance it can look plain, gray-brown and beautifully camouflaged. But when it takes off, it flashes an unmistakable bold black and white wing pattern. Willets forage by probing and picking crabs, worms, and other small coastal goodies in the mud. They are famously loud for a shorebird - announcing themselves with a sharp ringing 'pill-WILL-et" that carries across the marsh. Willets are strong migrants. They travel long distances between breeding grounds in North America and wintering coasts farther south - returning to the same shoreline spots year after year.
