Unitarian Church is tucked behind King Street and 4 Archdale Street. It is one of Charleston’s most peaceful surprises - an oasis of shade, paths, and a soaring steeple. It is the South’s oldest Unitarian Church and a treasured survivor of the city’s earliest days.
The congregation traces back to 1772 colonial Charleston. Construction was interrupted by the Revolutionary era and was completed and dedicated in 1787. In the 1850’s, Charleston architect, Francis D. Lee, transformed the original Georgian meeting house into a dramatic Gothic-style landmark with vertical lift and ecclesiastical elegance. In 1976, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark and the garden churchyard is part of Charleston’s beloved Gateway Walk.
