St. Philip’s Church sits at 142 Church street. Its refined Georgian lines and iconic spire rising over the historic district is one of Charleston’s most enduring “Holy City” landmarks.
Founded in 1680, it is recognized as the oldest congregation south of Virginia. The churchyard is so rich with early American history that it is often called the “Westminster Abbey of South Carolina”. After the 1835 fire, the church was quickly rebuilt. Later in 1848, Edward Brickell White crowned the skyline with the iconic steeple/spire. From 1893 to 1915, a fixed white light in the steeple served as the “rear range light” guiding ships into Charleston Harbor. The “front light” was located at Fort Sumter.
