St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church is one of Charleston’s most unmistakable landmarks - a defining steeple in the “Holy City” skyline.
This iconic church was first founded in 1840 by German speaking Charlestonians on Hasell and Anson Streets. As the congregation grew, a larger church was built at 405 King Street between 1867 and 1872; designed to draw the eye upward in light, height, and reverence. The steeple was topped with an ornate iron finial created by celebrated Charleston ironworker Christopher Werner, but it was lost in the 1885 cyclone and was never replaced. The 1965 fire brought the steeple down. After careful restoration, it is now known to be Charleston’s highest steeple.
