St. John’s Lutheran Church sits at the corner of Clifford and Archdale Street. Considered the “Mother Church of Lutheranism” in Charleston and South Carolina, it is home to Charleston’s oldest Lutheran congregation.
Roots are traced to the city’s early German-speaking community. The story reaches back to 1742, when the renowned Lutheran Pastor Henry Melchior Muhlenberg held Charleston services. Built 1816 to 1818, Frederick Wesner blended Federal simplicity with Baroque flourish - especially in its elegant tower and airy light filled interior. Longtime story, Rev. John Backman, who led the church for decades beginning 1815, became a major American naturalist while serving his congregation.
