I crossed paths with this Jaguar at the Stone Zoo just outside of Boston, MA.

Panthera Onca is the largest big cat in the Americas – a secretive powerhouse that moves through rainforests, swamps, and river-country from Mexico to Argentina. Jaguars have the strongest bite of any big cat relative to their size – a skull crushing advantage that helps them tackle tough prey. Unlike cheetahs or lions, jaguars are built for ambush and often stick close to water, where they hunt everything from deer and peccaries (pig-like mammals) to caiman (crocodilian reptiles) and turtles. Across much of their range, jaguars are under pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, declining prey, and retaliatory killing when they come into conflict with livestock – plus growing threat of illegal trade in jaguar parts. The species is currently listed as “Near Threatened” on the IUCN Red List.
