Florida’s elusive, long-tailed big cat is the wild heartbeat of south Florida – secretive, solitary, and surprisingly athletic in waterlogged country. They are built for moving silently through pinelands, hardwood hammocks, and the swampy edges of the Everglades. Once found across much of the Southeast, panthers are now mostly concentrated in south Florida, south of Lake Okeechobee. They need huge and connected wild spaces to hunt and raise kittens. They travel long distances through forests, prairies, and wetlands as they follow prey like deer and feral hogs. Habitat fragmentation is a big problem, but the biggest danger is vehicle strikes – the major documented cause of panther deaths. The species is federally listed as “Endangered” with current estimates commonly place the wild population at roughly 120 to 230.
