I crossed paths with this Indian Peafowl at the Bronx Zoo in Bronx, NY.
I will donate 15% of the sale of this limited edition print to Wildlife Conservation.
This is the classic “peacock” most people picture. The males flash that insane, shimmering blue neck and the huge fan of tail coverts covered in “eye” spots. Females, peahens, are mostly brown/green and built for camouflage. They are native to the Indian subcontinent, especially Sri Lanka and India, and are introduced in many places. They do well in open forests, farmland edges, shrub, and even near villages. As omnivore opportunists, they feed on seeds, grains, fruit, insects, and sometimes small reptiles/amphibians. They are loud dramatic callers, especially before rain, and they often roost in trees at night. Globally, they are of “Least Concern”. But, locally the habitat loss, pesticides (insect spray), and poaching reduce populations.
