I crossed paths with this Painted Bunting on Kiawah Island, SC - just south of Charleston.

Painted Bunting looks like somebody dropped a paint set on a songbird.  Males have electric blue head, green back, and a warm red belly.  Females are a smooth leaf-green that disappears into shrubs.  They breed in the coastal Southeast and parts of south-central U.S. – often sticking to thickets, brushy edges, and overgrown fields.  They will visit seed feeders, when habitat is nearby.  Globally, they are of “Least Concern” and considered stable.  Sad but true, is that they are still illegally trapped for the cage-bird trade in parts of their range – adding stress and habitat loss.
