I crossed paths with this American Oystercatcher in the lake off Lockwood Drive on the peninsula of Charleston, SC.
 
The American Oystercatcher is the beach's loudest, stylish locksmith - strutting along the shoreline on bubble-gum pink legs and what mimics a bold black-and-white "tux". They wield their bright orange bill like a precision tool. You will spot them probing sandbars, tidal flats, and oyster reefs. They pry open mussels and oysters, They are famous for their shape, piping calls, and their serious devotion to family life. Pairs often stick together and fiercely defend their nests, which are simple scrapes in the sand - vulnerable to high tides, storms, and beach traffic.
