Know lovingly as “Mother Emanuel”, this brilliant white Gothic Revival church sits at 110 Calhoun Street. For two centuries, it has been known as Charleston’s beacon of Black faith, leadership, and resilience.
Founded in 1816, under the leadership of Rev. Morris Brown, the congregation endured persecution. Earliest church was burned in 1822 and rebuilt repeatedly - shaping Charleston’s spiritual and civic life. Many of the original interior details survived the 1886 earthquake, making it one of Charleston’s most significant historic churches. “Mother Emmanuel” is recognized as the oldest Black Charleston church and one of the earliest AME churches.
