The Amur Tiger, a.k.a. the “Siberian Tiger, is the biggest cat on Earth and the ultimate snow-country predator. They are built for brutal winters with dense fur, wide paws that act like snowshoes, and a huge roaming range through forested mountains – 10 miles in a single night following prey. They live mostly in Russia’s Far East, with a growing cross-border presence in northeast China. Of course, they are listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. Estimates cite 265 to 486 adults/subadults in Russia, plus a smaller number in China and possibly North Korea. Threats are poaching, habitat fragmentation, logging, and prey declines. A hopeful sign is the reporting of 70 tigers within China Tiger & Leopard National Park in 2024.
