I crossed paths with this Least Tern on Vanderbilt Beach in Naples, FL.
This tiny firecracker of the beach is quick, bright, and fearless despite small size. With a crisp black cap, pale gray wings, and a sunny yellow bill (often with a dark tip), they zip over shallow water and suddenly drop-dive to snatch small fish near the surface. Least Terns nest right on open sand and shell flats, often in busy colonies that feel like a swarm of airborne glitter. They are constantly calling, defending their space, and escorting intruders away from their nests, Because they nest directly on beaches, Least Terns are especially vulnerable to disturbance from people and pets. Many coastal conservationists rope off nesting zones each season to help chicks survive. They are a true coastal summer vibe: light, fast, and full of attitude.
