The Belted Kingfisher is the spiky-crested, big-billed fisherman of the rivers, ponds, marshes, and coastlines. Their loud rattling call is often heard before they are seen.
Across North America, it is the only kingfisher you will regularly encounter.  Depending on open water, some individuals stay put while others migrate south for winter to Mexico, Central America, and as far as South America.  The female is flashier than the male.  She wears an extra rusty chestnut band across her belly. Globally, their status is “Least Concern”.  Some sources note regional declines and vulnerability where nesting banks get disturbed or lost.
