I crossed paths with this Great Blue Heron in Mount Pleasant, SC just north of Charleston.
This bird is the tall, calm sentinel of the wetlands - part statue, part stealth hunter. They stand motionless at the edge of a creek or pond and then suddenly launch a lightning-fast strike to spear fish, frogs, or even small mammals with their long dagger bill. They are surprisingly detailed with slate blue bodies, rusty thighs, and a bold black eyebrow stripe that give them a slightly fierce prehistoric aura. In flight, their unmistakable slow and powerful wingbeats with “S” shaped neck glide low over marshes like they own the place. They often nest in large communal groups called “rookeries”., sometimes with dozens of nests packed high in the trees - an entire neighborhood of herons raising chicks altogether.
