I crossed paths this Black Crowned Night Heron just off the waterfront path along Lockwood Drive - on the Charleston peninsula

This heron is the stocky, stealthy twilight hunter of marches, ponds, and tidal creeks. By day, they often look half asleep, while hunched on a branch with their head tucked in. At dusk they come alive by stepping slowly along the water’s edge and striking with lightning speed for fish, frogs, crabs, and insects. Adults have a crisp black “cap and cape”, pale gray wings, and striking red eyes. In breeding season, they can sport elegant white plumes trailing from the back of their head. You will find them across much of the world, and in the United States. They are right at home anywhere shallow water meets good cover and sometimes nest in surprisingly loud colonies with other wading birds. Juveniles look totally different with bold white spots on brown coats. People often don’t realize that “that speckled heron” and the “sleek black-crowned” adult are the same species.
