The Green Heron is the little mastermind of the marsh. They are compact, secretive, and packed with attitude. Instead of wading out in the open, like bigger herons, they prefer the edges with shaded banks, docks, pilings, mangrove roots, and tucked-away corners where they can freeze into stillness and strike in a blink. In good light, you will catch their rich chestnut neck, deep greenish back, and sharp dagger bill - like a jewel-toned bird wearing a cloak. When they finally take off, they often give a surprised and raspy "kyow", as if they cannot believe you spotted them. Green Herons are one of the few birds known to use tools, They may drop insects, bread, or other small items onto the water to lure fish closer to snatch them up.
