I crossed paths with this Cedar Waxwing at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in Columbus, OH.
I will donate 15% of the sale of this limited edition print to Wildlife Conservation.
This bird is a silky-looking bird with a little black bandit-like mask and a soft crest. If you catch the light just right, they have tiny red “wax” droplets on the wings. Famously social and nomadic, they show up in flocks that seem to materialize out of nowhere when berry trees are popping. When only one bird can reach berries at the tip of a twig, waxwings may line up and pass berries beak-to-beak so everyone gets a turn – like a tiny snack conveyor belt. They eat mostly fruit year-round from serviceberry, dogwood, hawthorn, cedar berries, etc. In the summer, they snatch insects right out of the air. They are of “Least Concern” and are considered stable to slightly increasing in recent decades.
