This church is the mother of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston. It is located at 120 Broad Street. This warm brownstone in Gothic Revival splendor is one of Charleston’s most iconic silhouettes - an anchor of the “Holy City” skyline.
An earlier cathedral on this same site was consecrated in 1854 and was tragically lost in Charleston’s Great Fire of 1861. The present cathedral was begun in 1890 by architect, Patrick Keely, and was dedicated in 1907 - renewing the skyline with soaring arches and in stonework and luminous stained glass. In 2010, the cathedral’s long planned spire was completed - finishing a vision more than a century in the making.
