Cardinals are the backyard show-stopper - bold, bright, and impossible to ignore. The male's vivid red plumage and black face mask look almost painted on. The female glows in warm rusty tones with red accents that are just as beautiful. Cardinals do not migrate. They are year-round residents across much of the eastern and central U.S. While mostly hanging out in shrubs, woodland edges, gardens, and hedges; they crack seeds with their strong cone-shaped bills. Once you recognize their clear ringing whistle, you will start hearing cardinals everywhere. Unlike many songbirds, cardinal pairs often sing back and forth. Females sing too, sometimes for the nest, which is pretty rare in the bird world.
