The Blue Jay is the loud and confident “neighborhood security system” of eastern North America. They are bright blue with a bold crest and a whole vocabulary of calls.  Smart and adaptable, they thrive in forests, suburbs, and city parks.  They eat a bit of everything – especially acorns and other nuts.  They eat a lot of insects, especially when feeding chicks.  Even though they have a reputation for raiding nests, a big study of their diet found very little evidence of them eating eggs or other birds.  Their status is “Least Concern” and trend appears to be stable.
