I crossed paths with this Black Bellied Plover on Vanderbilt Beach in Naples, FL.

This bird is the polished, athletic "sprinter" of the shoreline. They are often seen pausing, scanning, and then dashing across tidal flats with quick confidence. In non-breeding season, it wears a silver-gray and white look with a bold black "armpit" patch visible in flight. Their breeding plumage transforms dramatically to a striking black face and belly that gives the species its name. These plovers forage on beaches and mudflats for marine worms, small crustaceans, and insects. They are alert and watchful birds - the first to notice and announce when something feels off along the coast. They are long distance travelers. Some migrate thousands of miles between Arctic breeding grounds and coastal wintering areas - making them one of the great endurance athletes of the bird world.
